Introduction

The road to establishing a legal framework for abortion in NI was an arduous one and involved the monumental efforts of those affected by the denial of these rights, those involved in the advancement of human rights, legal experts, abortion rights activists and organisations, health professionals, politicians and civic society in general. 

While the campaign has moved on to focus on service implementation, destigmatising abortion and reproductive justice, it’s important to learn from those involved in the campaign to establish a legal framework for abortion provision.

Online Learning

Here, you’ll learn about the history of abortion law reform in NI and develop an understanding of the complex interplay of actors and circumstances that brought this about. A key question you’ll consider is whether changing the law is enough to bring about social and political change and what else might be needed.
